About and Contact

In Greek, my name is Ρωξάνη.  By trade, I am a conflict management professional who specializes in the effects of war and conflict on women. As a photographer and writer, I am a fervent believer in the power of storytelling. I have lived, loved, laughed, worked, photographed, and agonized in Latin America, East Africa, the Balkans, and the Middle East.

Stories of Conflict and Love does not fit squarely within the categories of an aid blog, a travel blog, or a journal. I write about photography, writing, reading and storytelling, gender and feminism, travel and wanderlusting, war, conflict and international development. Ultimately, I write about what moves me in the world and it is a privilege to be sharing this journey with you.

A glimpse into Stories of Conflict and Love
Before I started living and working in conflict zones, I was a student of History and Literature at Harvard University. Before that, Greece, where I was born and raised, was teaching me how to appreciate sunshine and the poetry of Odysseas Elytis. If you are curious as to how this journey has unfolded, what some of my most memorable moments at work have been, or what is close to my heart, I would suggest starting here:
  1. Taking a cue from Joan Didion: Joan Didion has inspired my creative journeys in numerous ways, from providing insight into coping with grief to setting an example for masterful storytelling. In this essay, I reflect on how Joan Didion stayed on my mind as I prepared for another life journey.
  2. November 17: A momentous day in Greek history and my life.
  3. The places that make your heart crack: The personal essay is my favorite genre to read and write. Travel essays recur on this site; this particular one contains reflections after returning from Cuba.
  4. From Libya to Midnight in Paris and Bon Iver to Hillary: A sample of the media round-ups I often post, including links about storytelling, conflict, photography, gender and love.
  5. Photoessays: This link will take you to some of my favorite photographs shot in Greece, Cuba, Israel, Colombia, and beyond.
+1... In 2012, I am documenting life with a photograph every day. I am collecting these images at Measuring Life in Photographs

Elsewhere on the web
In addition to sharing my journey at Stories of Conflict and Love, I am a contributing writer and photographer for various portals that highlight the themes of conflict, international development, women and gender, and storytelling. In Open Democracy, I discuss the shame that often surrounds conversations about conflict and trauma. At Gender Across Borders, I have written about women's entrepreneurship and peace-building in the Middle East. For PeacexPeace, I have interviewed women participating in the Egyptian revolution and at PolicyMic and Critical Peace, I discuss the value, challenges and responsibilities associated with storytelling in conflict zones. Beth Nicholls recently interviewed me to talk in depth about photography and storytelling. Check back soon for a complete list of links.
